Ancient Athenian vases frequently feature depictions of episodes from Greece's legendary past—in particular, images of great mythical battles. François Lissarrague, Getty Villa Professor in residence for 2008–09, examines the fascinating battle scenes on a variety of ancient Greek vases and explains their symbols and meaning. He explores how the splendid weapons and beautiful bodies represented on these vases reflected the Greeks' belief in their divine origins and thus helped to create a heroic identity for the Greek aristocrats who owned and used them.
