Join two eminent scholars as they inaugurate the Getty Research Institute's 2007–2008 scholar year. On October 4, classical historian Erich Gruen, this year's Getty Villa Professor, offers new perspectives on cultural appropriation or "identity theft" in ancient societies. On October 17, literary theorist and historian Angus Fletcher, this year's Getty Center Professor, advances a theory of change that brings into focus our understanding of cultural development.

Both lectures are free; reservations are required for the lecture at the Getty Center, and a ticket is required for the lecture at the Getty Villa.

Friday Nights at the Getty continues with performances by two artistic trailblazers. Free; reservations required. Reservations available beginning Thursday, September 20, at 9:00 a.m.

October 5: Jimmie Dale Gilmore
The cowboy poet and member of the lendary trio The Flatlanders delivers his alt-country blend of Eastern mysticism and Western grit.

October 12: Lionel Popkin
The choreographer and dancer conjures a dazzling kaleidoscope of movement, sound, and light in Miniature Fantasies, a dance trio inspired by 17th-century Indian paintings.

Learn how to preserve your treasures—from priceless heirlooms to basement leftovers—from the sultan of stuff, Don Williams. The Smithsonian conservator and co-author of the popular guide Saving Stuff combines humor and encyclopedic knowledge to help you safeguard "the museum of you."

Fourteen voices become one perfectly tuned instrument in Pomerium's unforgettable concerts

Hymns and prayers rise in luminous song in this performance of chants inspired by manuscripts in the current exhibition Music for the Masses: Illuminated Choir Books. Pomerium revives the golden age of a cappella singing with a mastery that makes it "the standard by which early-music vocal groups are measured" (The New York Times).

The Benevento-Russo Duo unleashes gale-force instrumentals full of craft and beauty

Shake off the workweek with this energizing evening of music, gallery browsing, and food and drink.

This month, the Benevento-Russo Duo works the keyboards and drums to conjure an amazing range of sounds, from dreamy jazz odysseys to gritty Led Zeppelin riffs, and Something for Rockets casts a spell with hypnotic dance-floor beats, lush melodies, and smart lyrics.

Discover the Getty Villa in this day of hands-on family activities

Voyage across ancient Rome, the Middle East, and the canals of Venice with music, storytelling, and art-making workshops inspired by the exhibition Reflecting Antiquity: Modern Glass Inspired by Ancient Rome, opening October 18.

Free; an advance, timed ticket is required. Each ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. Tickets are available beginning Thursday, September 20, at 9:00 a.m.

Admission to the Getty Villa is always FREE. A ticket is required. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. Please note that this does not apply to tickets for events, such as lectures and performances. Check current ticket availability online or call (310) 440-7300. Ticket availability is updated weekly for a two-month period. Same-day tickets may also become available online without advance notice. Groups of 15 or more must make reservations by phone. Parking is $15, but FREE for evening events after 5:00 p.m.
