Spring / Alma-Tadema
Lawrence Alma-Tadema imagined ancient Rome in pastel tones in his painting Spring (detail), but the reality may have been much darker.

Lavish processions followed Rome's greatest victories and bloodiest massacres, in which kings, soldiers, gold, silver, bullion, and artworks were paraded past the cheering hordes of Rome. Pioneering classicist Mary Beard explores the magnificence of such triumphal processions and the questions they raise about the glorification of military might.
