Covenant Chain (American history, drafted early 1600s)

Note: Agreement settled between members of the Haudenosaunee confederacy and British colonial administrators, first drafted in the early 17th century. Fractured temporarily in 1753 due to Mohawk resistance to colonial settlement in Haudenosaunee land, but was renewed in 1754 after further negotiations. In 1760, the Seven Fires (an alliance between the Huron-Wendat, Abenaki, Algonquin, and Mohawks in Kahnestake and other Canadian towns) also joined the agreement, creating territory boundaries. While relations became strained during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), the Covenant Chain is still used to mediate relationships between Canada, the Seven Fires nations, and Haudenosaunee communities in Canada and the United States. The name refers to the concept of polishing a chain as a metaphor for strengthening relations.
