Ponca Powwow (American history, began 1879)

Note: Considered the first modern powwow; grew out of social dances held between the Ponca and other Plains Native tribes as well as various dance societies and ceremonies held by the Ponca. Organized in the first few years after Ponca communities were removed from Nebraska and South Dakota to Oklahoma. The diversity of participants in the Ponca Powwow and other early dances were a consequence of the reservation period, with many Native American tribes now in close proximity to each other. Continues into the 21st century, retaining a similar focus on social dances.
