Note: Narratives surrounding the story from Genesis 16-21, in which Abraham and Sarah cannot have a child. Sarah offers her servant Hagar, who has a son with Abraham; the child is named Ishmael. Sarah resents Hagar. Sarah then conceives a child of her own, Isaac. Hagar and Ishmael are banished and wander in the desert, almost dying before divine intervention saved them. Eventually they settle, and Ishmael has 12 sons who become tribal chiefs.
