Circe (Greek deity, sorceress)

Note: In Greek legend, goddess or sorceress, the daughter of Helios and the ocean nymph Perse. Using drugs and incantations, she could change people into swine and other animals. In Homer's Odyssey X and XII, Odysseus visited the island Aeaea with his companions; she changed all into swine, except Odysseus, who was protected by a gift of Hermes, the herb moly. Odysseus stayed with her for a year, then continued his odyssey. Greco-Roman tradition placed her either on an island near Italy or on Mount Circeo.
