Battle of Vicksburg (American Civil War, 1863)

Note: Last in a series of battles and military actions known collectively as The Vicksburg Campaign. The focus of a campaign mounted by Union forces, the fortress city of Vicksburg was the last Confederate held stronghold on the Mississippi River. After prevuis attempts had failed, Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee finally crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate Army of Mississippi, led by Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton into the defensive lines surrounding the city. The Confederate surrender on July 4, 1863, following the siege at Vicksburg, is sometimes considered, along with Gen. Robert E. Lee's defeat at, the turning point of the war.
