Battle of Chancellorsville (American Civil War battle, 1863)

Note: The Battle of Chancellorville pitted Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's Union Army against the smaller Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee. Chancellorsville is considered Lee's greatest triumph of the Civil War because of his risky decision to divide his army into two forces, with General Stonewall Jackson leading a surprise attack of the Union right. Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker withdrew, and Lee’s attacks over the next three days forced a Union retreat north of the river. Of 130,000 Union soldiers engaged at Chancellorsville, more than 17,000 were casualties, of 60,000 Confederates, more than 12,000 were casualties. The greatest casualty of the Battle of Chancellorville was the loss of Stonewall Jackson to friendly fire.
