Battle of Shiloh (American Civil War battle, 1862)

Note: Battle of Shiloh, also called Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was fought on April 6-7, 1862 in southwestern Tennessee. Union Army Major General Ulysses S. Grant was encamped at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on the west bank of the river, where Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and Pierre G. T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack on Grant's army. Johnston was killed during the fighting and Beauregard, now in command of the army, decided to cease the attack later in the afternoon. Overnight Grant was reinforced by divisions from another Union army under Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, thus allowing them to launch an unexpected counterattack the next morning which completely reversed the Confederate gains of the previous day. Both sides faced the heavy casualties—about 10,000 men on each side
