Note: Poem and prose on the topic of courtly love in a prosimetrum style. Noted for being written in Italian, rather than Latin; one of Dante's works that helped to establish the Tuscan dialect as the standard for the Italian language. Written about 1293, published 1295. Tells the story of author Dante and the unattainable Beatrice, the ideal woman. La vita nuova describes Dante’s love beginning with his first sight of Beatrice when both are nine years of age until her early death. Comprises 42 brief chapters with commentaries on 25 sonnets, one ballata, and four canzones; a fifth canzone is left interrupted by the death of Beatrice.
