Saint John the Evangelist and the Poisoned Cup (Christian iconography)

Note: The chalice as symbolic of St. John, which was not adopted until the 13th century, is usually interpreted with reference to the Last Supper. Images of John with the cup gave rise to a legend according to which St. John was handed a cup of poisoned wine, from which, at his blessing, the poison rose in the shape of a serpent and warned him.
