Annunciation to the Virgin Mary (Christian iconography)

Note: Narrative in which Mary the angel Gabriel was sent to the Virgin Mary at Nazareth to inform her that she would conceive a child miraculously; she was impregnated at that moment. Examples of depictions include the Virgin at prayer, being surprised by an angel, with the Holy Spirit above. The angel and Mary may be on opposite sides of a void, such as a door, representing the gap between the real world and the heavenly world. Basic story is from Luke 1:26-38.
