Pietà (Christian iconography)

Note: Devotional image or narrative in which the Virgin Mary mourning over the corpse of Jesus is the main focus; she may have the body on her lap or in her arms, as a counterpoint to the Madonna and Child. The iconography has roots in ancient imagery, such as the Greek goddess Eos holding the body of Memnon. For scenes in which the focus is on multiple people mourning Jesus, use "Lamenation of Christ."
