Joseph, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Step father of Jesus, husband of the Virgin Mary. Particularly in the context of the Nativity of Christ, Joseph may be portrayed as an older man, to enforce the concept that Jesus had a virgin birth. As a devotional image, he may be portrayed with a flowering rod (symbolic of the Betrothal to the Virgin Mary), a lily (symbol of purity), carpenters' tools, or the Christ Child. From the New Testament and various later sources.
