Saint George Slaying the Dragon (Christian iconography)

Note: Narrative of St. George on horseback, slaying a dragon with a spear or sword, or a devotional image of George with a dragon. A princess is often seen nearby. In western tradition from the Golden Legend, a dragon or crocodile protected the stream providing water for a city; it required payment of a sheep; when the citizens ran out of sheep, a young maid was offered. George swept in and slayed the dragon, which is an allegory for paganism. In eastern tradition, the kneeling woman is the wife of Diocletian, and the image refers to the death of George. The story has roots in older mythology; for example, parallels with tales of Perseus, Cetus, and Andromeda are clear.
