Peter, Saint (Christian character)

Note: Christian saint and apostle of Jesus; in the early Christian church, recognized as the leader of the disciples. For Roman Catholic church held to be the first of its unbroken succession of popes. Peter, a fisherman, was called to be a disciple of Jesus at the beginning of his ministry. He received from Jesus the name "rock," in the Gospels from the Greek "petros."
