The Virgin Annunciate (drawing (visual work); Francisco Bayeu y Subias (Spanish painter and tapestry desig...; about 1769; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2009.94)
Note: One of the most successful artists at the court of King Charles III of Spain, which also employed Giambattista Tiepolo and Anton Raphael Mengs, Bayeu studied with Antonio Gonzalez Velazquez (no relation), who in turn had studied with Corrado Giaquinto in Rome. This partly accounts for the Italianate flavor of the sheet, although Bayeu treats the drapery in a softer, cooler, less luxurious manner reminiscent of Mengs. The drawing is a study for the Virgin Annunciate in Bayeu's Annunciation painted in the cloister of the convent of San Pascual de Aranjuez (Madrid). The works were commissioned by King Charles III in 1769, and the Annunciation was the first of the four scenes to be painted, occupying Bayeu for the autumn of 1769, while the others followed in 1770. Sadly, the paintings do not survive apart from fragments remaining in the Prado, but the compositions are known through Bayeu's preparatory bozzetti and surviving copies by pupils. In this drawing Bayeu's interest is focused on the drapery of the Virgin Annunciate, and the head and surrounding furniture are only briefly sketched in. The fall of light and disposition of the drapery are carefully modelled in black chalk with white chalk highlights.
