"La Machine d'Argent" or Centerpiece for a Table (surtout de table) (sculpture (visual works); François-Thomas Germain (French, 1726 - 1791) (French Art...; 1754; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 2005.43;)
Note: This sculpture in silver represents a still life of game birds, a rabbit, and vegetables. It is a three-dimensional work in the genre celebrating the trophies of the hunt, as was more typically portrayed in paintings by such artists as Alexandre François Desportes (1661-1743) and Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755). The subject also alludes to the ingredients of the rich stew (called oille-en-pôt) that was traditionally made from the game so, in addition to birds and the rabbit, there are also root vegetables and a variety of mushrooms. The rectangular footed base, suggestive of the earthen floor of a wood or glade, supports a composition of two birds, a long beaked snipe and an ortolan, a rabbit, a small cauliflower on its leafy stalk, an onion, a turnip, a gherkin, a truffle, a morel, a mushroom, and parsley.
