The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist (recto); Amorous Putti at Play; Head of a Bird (verso) (preparatory studies; Michelangelo Buonarroti (Italian, 1475 - 1564) (Italian Arti...; about 1530; J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, Los A...; 93.GB.51)
Note: The subject of the recto is the legendary meeting of the Holy Family with the infant Baptist on their journey back from Egypt. The technique of the drawing is unusually complex; Michelangelo began with the stylus, indenting the outlines of the figures and the fall of their drapery. Then he used the red chalk to define the central group with the Virgin, saint John the Baptist and the Christ child. With a soft grey-black chalk, he draw the Holy Family, the angels and the donkey. After, in order to strengthen the central group he used the pen and ink, and subsequently scratched out many pen lines to obtain the white paper underneath. In the final stage, he added some oiled black chalk on the chin and neck of the Virgin, and on the legs and groin of the Christ child. The purpose of this elaborate drawing is not known; it has always been dated after 1530.On the verso, a group of playing putti are quickly sketched, and a quotation from the poet Petrarch (1304-1374), "Tempo verrĂ  ancor" (time will come again), is inscribed in pen and ink.
