York Minster (cathedral (building); unknown architect, constructed under Walter De Gray (British...; constructed 1220-1472, restore...; York (York, England, United Kingdom, Europe, World, Top of t...)
Note: Considered one of England's greatest gothic buildings and the repository for the largest collection of medieval stained glass in England. The remains of a Roman basilica are located beneath the current structure. Several Christian churches have historically occupied this site: a wooden builing (destroyed 741), a stone Saxon church (destroyed 1075), and a Norman-style church. Archbishop Water de Gray ordered the construction of a Gothic structure starting in 1220. The Minster is built of oolite, or olitic limestone, from the Tadcaster area. The building was consecrated on July 3, 1472.
