Old Saint Peter's Basilica (former structure; unknown architect; commissioned by Constantine I; constructed in 4th century, ra...)
Note: Construction began 318/322 by orders of Emperor Constantine I. It was a church of basilical form, having a wide nave and two aisles on each side, in the shape of a tau cross. In front of the entrance was a large colonnaded atrium. This church had been built over the small shrine believed to mark the burial place of St. Peter. It had fallen into disrepair while the papacy was located in Avignon; was razed as the new Saint Peter's Basilica was erected.
