Arc de Triomphe du Trône (triumphal arch (memorial arch); based on designs by Charles Perrault (French, 1613-1688), bu...; begun 1670, demolished 1716)
Note: Ephemeral arch was located at the end of faubourg Saint Anoine in a circular area surrounded by trees, then named "le Trône" because a magnificent ephemeral throne was erected here in 1660, upon which Louis XIV and queen Maria Theresa received homage from their subjects on 6 August 1660. An arch was proposed to memorialize the occasion. The Arc de Triomphe du Trône was a 3-arched structure, begun in 1670. Construction in stone reached the columns; the monument was continued in plaster. Today, some scholars question whether it was ever completed. When Louis XIV died in 1716, it was demolished.
