In Conversation with Jim Dine
In the first contemporary art project at the Getty Villa, Jim Dine has produced new sculpture and poetry in response to works of art in the Museum's antiquities collection. Dine speaks with author and art critic Vincent Katz about the creative process behind the new works and the ways in which ancient Greek and Roman art continues to inspire him. Artist-at-Work Demonstration

Making Mosaics
Drop in as world-renowned mosaicist Lillian Sizemore demonstrates ancient and modern mosaic-making techniques featuring a vast array of contemporary and traditional materials, resources, and setting styles. Watch Sizemore create a hand-cut piece using a traditional hammer and hardie (chiseled cutting tool), and try your hand at setting a bit of mosaic. Free with your advance, timed ticket to the Getty Villa.

Studio Courses

Ancient Stones in Modern Contexts
Make your own contemporary art inspired by antiquity at this daylong mosaic-making workshop led by world-renowned mosaic artist Lillian Sizemore. The day begins with an inspiring presentation of mosaic art, from ancient mosaic pavement designs to contemporary works influenced by antiquity. A gallery tour focusing on the Villa's mosaics follows. Participants then design and complete their own geometric mosaic design using marble tiles. No mosaic experience is needed. Antiquity as Muse
Join artist Jaime Ursic and explore the enduring allure of ancient art from the Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cultures. Different media will be investigated as each participant responds to objects in the Villa galleries and creates a work of art of his or her own. Course fee $85; $70 students. Each session open to 12 participants.
