Jim Dine discussed his work with author and art critic Vincent Katz in this special event at the Getty Villa. Dine's new installation Jim Dine: Poet Singing (The Flowering Sheets), on view October 30, 2008–February 9, 2009, features new sculpture and poetry created in response to works of art in the antiquities collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa. The installation is the first contemporary art project at the Villa and the result of over a year of intense work by Dine in his Washington studio.

Dine spoke with Katz about the creative process behind the new works and the ways in which ancient Greek and Roman art continues to inspire him.

About Jim Dine
Since emerging in the early 1960s as part of the Pop Art movement, Jim Dine (born 1935) has become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American art. While best known for his expressive depictions of the heart symbol and commonplace modern objects such as tools and a man's bathrobe, Dine has always had a deep fascination with Greek and Roman antiquities. In media as diverse as drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and painting, he has reached across the centuries to engage classical artists, re-creating their work and making it his own.

About Vincent Katz
Vincent Katz is a poet, translator, art critic, and curator. Author of nine books of poetry, Katz won the 2005 National Translation Award for his translation from the Latin of The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius. His work in the field of contemporary art ranges from critical essays and book collaborations with artists to curating exhibitions and making documentary films. Katz is the editor of the poetry and arts journal VANITAS and of Libellum books.
