Lectures

Dilettanti: The Antic and the Antique in Eighteenth-Century England
Founded as a dining club for alumni of the Grand Tour, the Society of Dilettanti combined witty irreverence with a serious commitment to connoisseurship, collecting, and patronage of the fine arts. Bruce Redford, professor of art history and English at Boston University and co-curator of the exhibition Grecian Taste and Roman Spirit, explores the multifaceted activities and achievements of the Society and discusses how its expeditions to the eastern Mediterranean and its important investigations into architecture, topography, and sculpture set new standards for the study of the Graeco-Roman past. Free; a ticket is required.

Ruins and Revelry: The Society of Dilettanti
Established 275 years ago, the Society of Dilettanti has played a pivotal role in the exploration of the ancient Mediterranean. Delighting in the arts of classical antiquity, they found imaginative ways to fulfill the club's motto, seria ludo (serious matters in a playful vein). Charles Sebag-Montefiore, current joint secretary of the Society, blends history and anecdote in this insider's view of the club's exploits and personalities, from the heyday of classical archaeology in the 19th century up to the present. Free; a ticket is required. Call (310) 440-7300 or use the "Get Tickets" button below.

Gallery Course

Collecting the Past and the Perception of Antiquity
Aristocratic European taste and the custom of collecting antiquities helped to frame perceptions of the classical past. Join art historian Ann Steinsapir in a discussion of the ways in which 18th- and 19th-century collectors' decisions have impacted our understanding of ancient Mediterranean cultures. The course includes a tour of the exhibitions Grecian Taste and Roman Spirit: The Society of Dilettanti and The Hope Hygieia: Restoring a Statue's History. Course fee $20. Open to 40 participants.
