Yi Huisu (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1836-1909)
|
Note: Yi Huisu was a calligrapher who was active at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. He was the nephew and pupil of Kim Gyujin, a leading painter and calligrapher in the modern era, and began to study painting at the age of five. Yi was referred to as "the master calligrapher of his time" and "the leader of nineteenth-century Pyongyang painting circles". His calligraphy and ink orchid paintings were influenced by Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856). He excelled in all styles of calligraphy-seal, clerical, regular, and running scripts. In addition to ink orchids, he mastered all themes of painting including landscapes and the Four Gentlemen. |
