Yi Samman (Korean calligrapher, 1770-1847)
|
Note: Yi Samman was a calligrapher of the late Joseon period. He showed a talent for writing as young child and absorbed himself in calligraphy for his entire life rather than seeking a government post. By emulating Chinese calligraphy from prior to Han Dynasty and Korean calligraphy by masters like Kim Saeng (711-?), Han Ho (1543-1605), Baek Gwanghun (1537-1582), Yang Saeon (1517-1584), and Yi Gwangsa (1705-1777), Yi developed a distinctive style called haengunyusu (drifting clouds and flowing water). He collaborated on calligraphy with Kim Jeonghui (1786-1856) and Yu Hanji (1760-1834). While active in the Jeonju region, Yi produced calligraphic materials to teach his students, who included Mo Sumyeong (active 18th-19th century). |
