Record Type: Person
Yi Doyeong (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1884-1933)

Note: Yi Doyeong was a calligrapher, painter, and art educator active in the modern era. In the early 1900s, Yi studied painting from An Jungsik (1861¬-1919) and Jo Seokjin (1853-1920), both of whom were calligraphers and painters. Starting in 1911, he taught students together with his two teachers and other painters at the Calligraphy and Painting Society (Seohwa misulhoe). Inheriting the painting styles of An Jungsik and Jo Seokjin, both of whom were influenced by Jang Seungeop, Yi produced paintings on a wide range of themes, including landscapes, birds and flowers, narrative figures, and antique objects with cut flowers or grass. Moreover, he created covers and illustrations for publications such as novels. Many of his illustrations were satirical. Yi recognized the role of popular print media from early on and tried to use it to both awaken and educate people.
