Yi Gyoik (Korean painter, 1807-unknown)
|
Note: Yi Gyoik was a painter active in the late Joseon period and at its end. He studied how to paint along with Hong Ugil (1809-1890) and Jo Jeonggyu (1791-?) and was adept at landscape painting. He was also celebrated for his butterfly paintings. Yi made clever use of blank spaces and skillfully applied delicate brushwork. Moreover, while following in the painting style of Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806), he displayed rich and diverse creative abilities. He holds a significant place in the history of nineteenth-century butterfly painting and is considered important among painters specializing in it. |
