Yi Geon (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1614-1662)
|
Note: Yi Geon was a calligrapher, painter, and royal relative in the mid-Joseon period. He was a grandson of King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608), the fourteenth ruler of the Joseon Dynasty who was also a calligrapher and painter. He fathered the painter Yi Ryang (1645-1686). Yi Geon was proficient at poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He employed the calligraphic styles of Zhong Yao (151-230) and Wang Xizhi and particularly excelled at painting birds and animals. Yi Geon's bird-and-animal paintings bear similarities to bird-and-flower paintings by Yi Jing (1581-after 1653) and Yun Sinji (1582-1657). |
