Šlomovič, Erich (Yugoslavian art collector, 1915-1942)
|
Note: Born in Dakovo, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1915 to a Jewish family, he moved to Paris in the mid-1930s where he met and became the protegé of Ambroise Vollard. Through him, Šlomovič was able to amass a collection of art from Picasso, Matisse, Cocteau, and others. On the eve of the invasion of Paris by the Nazis, he stored many works in a bank in Paris and returned to Yugoslavia with the remainder of his collection, which he exhibited in Zagreb, 1940. He was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. The ownership of his collection is disputed by heirs of both Šlomovič and Vollard, and the Yugoslav government. |
