Skinner, Thomas (British auctioneer, 1737-1806)

Note: Thomas Skinner was a very important auctioneer during the second half of the 18th c. According to his obit in the Universal Magazine, he was the most successful of the period, making more money even than Christie. He first went into business as a household broker and salesman in 1762. He built a house at 87 Aldersgate St., which he used as his business address. According to his obit, he took on his former apprentice, Mr. Dyke, as partner ca. 1785 (and also a Mr. Jacques, though he isn't mentioned later). Skinner and Dyke continued after Skinner's death in 1806, with his younger son continuing the partnership with Dyke. Skinner was sheriff, alderman, and also Lord Mayor of London (1795).
