Yi Myeonggi (Korean painter and court artist, 1756-before 1813)
|
Note: Active in the late Joseon period, Yi Myeonggi served as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). He was from a family famous for producing several court painters, including his father Yi Jongsu (18th century.), his younger brother Yi Myeonggyu (1497-1560), and his father-in-law Kim Eunghwan (1742-1789). He maintained a relationship with Gang Sehwang (1713-1791) and his family and collaborated on portraits three times with Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806), the greatest court painter of the time. He earned his fame in portraits of kings and the noble. Yi developed the standardized the portrait method of the time by absorbing and adapting the painting styles of Jin Jaehae (?¬-1735) and Byeon Sangbyeok (1730-1775). He also depicted figures, clothes, and surrounding objects in a three-dimensional manner. Moreover, he produced a vast body of landscape-and-figure paintings, narrative figure paintings, and paintings based on poems. |
