Cyriacus of Ancona (Italian draftsman, traveler and antiquarian, 1391-ca. 1455)
|
Note: Cyriac was a self-educated merchant and occasional papal diplomatic agent. He is bes known for aiding in the rediscovery of the ancient world during the 15th century, due to his extensive travels and documentation of sites in Italy, Greece and the Near East between 1412 and 1449. He learned Latin and Greek and became the first accomplished amateur classicist; he is held as the father of modern archaeology and epigraphy. His explorations in Greece and the Levant resulted in the recovery of a number of manuscripts by ancient authors; he made detailed notes on the antiquities he observed during his travels. Although his collection of copies of the inscriptions, contained in six volumes of Commentaries, was destroyed by fire in 1514, some of his notebooks and copies of them survive. Cyriac's notebooks are invaluable for their descriptions and drawings of monuments that have since been lost or damaged. |
