Yi Gyeongyun (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1545-1611)
|
Note: Yi Gyeongyun was a calligrapher, painter, and royal relative in the mid-Joseon period. As a descendant of King Seongjong (r. 1469-1494), the ninth king of the Joseon Dynasty, Yi was a royal family painter. He was well versed in calligraphy and painting. His younger brother Yi Yeongyun (1561-1611) and his son Yi Jing (1581-after 1653) from his second wife were both skilled at painting and calligraphy as well. All of them maintained a friendship with Kim Si (1524-1593), a master of the style of the Zhe School of Painting. Yi Gyeongyun also adopted elements of the Zhe school, but developed them into his own distinctive style. He created paintings on diverse themes such as landscapes, landscapes and figures, ink bamboo, plum blossoms, birds and animals, and birds and flowers. His fame continued long after his death, as did the high demand for his works. |
