Shin Saimdang (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1504-1551)
|
Note: A calligrapher and painter active in the early Joseon period, Shin Saimdang was the mother of the Neo-Confucianist master Yi Yi (1536-1584) and the painter Yi U (1542-1609). She has long been considered emblematic of a good wife and wise mother, and of the value of education. Several historical records mention her reputation as a calligrapher and painter. There are a number of surviving works by Shin, which is unusual for an early Joseon painter. There are uncertainties about the attribution of many of these works, however. She painted on various themes, including landscapes, birds and animals, and ink grapes. A large body of her paintings also depict grasses and insects. Furthermore, she was talented at cursive script calligraphy. |
