Dixon, Samuel (Irish artist, died 1768 or 1769)
|
Note: A notable figure in the Irish decorative art movement. In 1748 he developed embossed paper pictures, hand-colored by miniaturists trained at the Dublin Society School. Dixon followed the illustrations in George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743-1751), and the pictures were sold not just for their decorative value but also for copying by embroiderers, japanners, and shell-workers. Dixon's success is attested to by the many emulators, or competitors, he had within a few years. |
