Na Suyeon (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1861-1926)
|
Note: Na Suyeon was a calligrapher, painter, and journalist active at the end of the Joseon period and in the modern era. Influenced by his father, who was an affluent commoner poet, Na Suyeon maintained the family tradition of sponsoring the arts. He often painted orchids with scholar's rocks. While following the style of Yi Haeung (Great Regent Heungseon, 1820-1898) in these paintings, he added his own touch by depicting several flowers on a single stalk. He was also skilled in calligraphy. The titles or poems that he wrote on his paintings show his distinctive curvilinear style. In his fifties, Na employed a more delicate painting style, but in his sixties, he turned to confident and resilient brushwork both in his paintings and in the titles or poems added to them. Moreover, he made some changes to his orchids by depicting them lavishly in groups with large flowers. |
