Primato Painter (Greek vase painter, active ca. 360-320 in Lucania)
|
Note: A red-figure vase painter who is considered the most important Lucanian vase painter of the second half of the 4th century BCE. He was incredibly prolific and a large number of his works are extant, allowing scholars to trace his development. He was the chief artist in what probably was a considerable workshop. His early work is related to that of the Lycurgus Painter. The Primato Painter is known for his elaborate decorative patterns, both floral and architectural, on the necks of his volute kraters and nestorides as well as for elaborate palmettes below the handles. His drawing can be skillful and elegant; the subject matter he depicts covers a broad range. |
