Note: Located on the River Don on the site of the Roman fort Danum. It grew as a market town in Middle Ages, as railway center in the 19th century, and as a service center for mining communities in the 20th century. Known for its butterscotch. A mansion house by James Paine (1745-1748) is one of country's finest and is noted for its ballroom. Doncaster is the site of the annual St. Leger horse race. |
