Note: The second largest body of water in the Middle East, and the largest in Turkey, Lake Van lies near the border of Iran in eastern Anatolia. A salt water lake, it does support fishing or irrigation. Lake Van was formed by volcanic activity during the Pleistocene Epoch, when lava flow from the nearby Nemrut volcano blocked the lake's outlet to the Murat River. Artifacts have been found here from the Urartian culture whose capital was located here ca. 860 BCE. |
