Note: Zanjān is located in the northwestern region of Iran with the provinces of Markaī, Gīlān, and Kordestān as its neighbors. In the 7th century BCE it was occupied by the Cadussians, who were subdued by the Medes. When Cyrus the Great defeated the Medes in 550 BCE, the Cadussians went under the authority of the Achaemenid empire (550-330 BCE). In consequence, there were a series of uprisings. The first took place in 406 BCE and was brought down by a son of King Darius II Nothus, Cyrus the Younger; and in 358 BCE by Artaxerxes III Ochus. The people of Zanjān fought side by side with the Persians against Alexander the Great in 331 BCE. Zanjān eventually grew into a major agricultural region. Zanjānrūd (Zanjān River) is the major river in the region. Zanjān is known for producing corn, rice, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, poultry, sheep, and cattle, in addition to, manufactured products that include bricks, cement, and carpets. |
