Note: Located in southwestern Tajikistan, Dushanbe was a planned city built by the Soviets at the location of three previous settlements. One the original settlements, known as Dyushambe, was part of the Persian empire until 1920 when it was overthrown by the Russians. In 1924, it was chosen to be the capital of the new Tajik Autonomous S.S.R., which became the Tajik S.S.R. in 1929. The city is noted for its wide, tree-lined streets, with mainly one-story structures due to the prevalence of earthquakes. |
