Note: Sarajevo is the capital city and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the Miljack River valley at the foot of Mount Trebevic. It was an important Roman center. Invading Goths, then Slavs arrived in the 7th century. Ottoman Turks arrived in the 15th century, leaving a lasting Islamic culture. The city was burned in 1697. The Austro-Hungarian Empire ruled it from 1878 until World War I, which began there when a Bosnian Serbian revolutionary assassinated the crown prince of the Empire. It was heavily damaged in World War II, but remained the administrative capital of the Bosnia and Herzegovina region of Yugoslavia. It served as the host of the Winter Olympics in 1984. After Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992, Sarajevo became the scene of civil war between Bosnian Muslims and Serbs, and suffered great damage. It has been in slow recovery since peace was established. The city's population remains largely Muslim. Its industry suffered a great setback due to the civil war, but old crafts such as carpet making and metalwork continue. The 2004 estimated population was 602,500. |
