Note: The German city of Bergisch Gladbach is located just east-northeast of the city of Cologne. It was an important medieval center with a 12th-century Romanesque church and two moated castles. It was the headquarters of the Order of St. John in the 16th century, and the Order's building still survives. Industrially it is primarily noted for the production of paper, but also produces glass fiber, pharmaceuticals, wool, electronics, and machinery. It absorbed the nearby town of Bensberg in 1975, which is the location of a nuclear reactor construction business. It is the center of tourism for the woodland district of Bergisches Land in the lower Rhine valley. The estimated population for 2004 was 105,500. |
