Note: Veliko Tŭrnovo is a city in northern Bulgaria situated on near-vertical sides of the gorge of the Yantra river. Its buildings are built on terraces, seemingly stacked one atop the other. Settled in prehistoric times, the site became a Roman fortress. In medieval times it was the sumptuous capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, until sacked by the Turks in 1393. It continued to be an educational and cultural center under the Ottoman Empire, and in the 19th century was the site of strong anti-Turkish resistance. The new kingdom of Bulgaria was proclaimed here in 1908. Much of its medieval remains has been and continues to be restored and preserved. One section, the Tsarevets Hill, the former residence of the Bulgarian Tsars, has thick walls and fortifications, and must be reached by drawbridge. Besides tourism, industries include the production of processed foods, furniture, textiles, and consumer items. The 2003 estimated population was 292,700. |
