Note: A former county of southern Wales; it was formed in 1974 from parts of Breconshire, Glamorgan, and Monmouthshire and was dissolved in 1996. Administrative powers were handed over to the new county boroughs of Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff, and part of Caerphilly. The county included a large portion of southern Wales coalfield and the valleys of Rhymney, Taff, and the Rhonddas crowded with mining settlements. Ironworks began in the 18th century, but declined in the 20th century; there are brickworks and breweries in Bridgend and major shopping centers in Pontypridd. |
