Note: The city is situated on the Traisen River in northeastern Austria, between the Danube River and the foothills of the Alps. Under the Romans it was a town called Aelium Cetium. Later an abbey dedicated to St. Hippolytus was established here. It was ruled by the Bishop of Passau until 1490 and became an episcopal see in 1785. It is known for its 16th-century town hall and Romanesque cathedral dating to the 11th century, both of which were renovated in the 18th century. The estimated population in 2003 was 49,500. |
