Note: City built on an ancient port on the Black Sea; founded ca. 560 BCE by Megarian colonists. Was destroyed by Romans 1st cen. BC; captured ca. 1360 CE by Turks; developed as a trading center by the Genoese. According to Greek mythology, the cave guarded by the three-headed dog Cerberus is located near the town. It is the site of the largest modern iron & steel mills in the Middle East. Is called "Karadeniz Ereğli," meaning means "Black Sea Ereğli" to distinguish it from other places called Ereğli. |
